LaVora Marcene Bates, age 85, wife, mother, grandmother and dearly loved by many, passed away suddenly on November 26, 2017 of heart failure. LaVora was born on December 12, 1932, the daughter of Harry L. and Vera P. Deitchler.

LaVora lived her childhood and teen years in Crawford and Alliance Nebraska. She graduated from Alliance High School in 1950, married Dale Clifford Slaymaker and began work in the Alliance city government. After a short time, LaVora began working for J.C. Penney where she worked for many years across several states (NE, CA, CO) until the time of her retirement some 40 years later. They started their family with the birth of their sons Dennis Dale (1952) and Douglas Duane (1955).

While living in San Jose, California, Dale passed away in 1967. LaVora moved her family to Colorado to be with family where she attended the Arvada Church of the Nazarene. In time, she met and dated Leo Vern Bates and they were married on September 25, 1970. LaVora dedicated many years to being a teacher's aide where she loved encouraging children and helping them to success, this included her great grandchildren where she would volunteer in their classes. Her family was her pride and joy and she loved each of us deeply. Some of her favorite pastimes included attending church services, school & kids sporting events, watching football, crafts and cross-stitching, collecting anything related to a "cute piggie", holding babies, tending to her roses and spoiling her fur babies. Leo and LaVora were a consistent representation of love and service to God. They were dedicated to their children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and yes, great, great grandchildren with whom they shared great happiness and unconditional love.

Loved ones who helped to prepare a place for her are her husband, Leo Vern Bates (2009), her first husband Dale C. Slaymaker (1967), her parents Harry L. Deitchler (1997), Vera P. Deitchler (2000), her daughter Carolyn B. Johnston (2016), her great grandson Austin James Jennewein (1996), and great, great granddaughter, Scarlet Hope Gamel (2009).

The many loved ones who are missing LaVora, include her sister Marlene Laursen (Ken), her children, Dennis Slaymaker (Debbie), Douglas Slaymaker (Sharon), Elmer Bates (Joanne), her fourteen (14) grandchildren; Nathan Slaymaker, Richard Slaymaker, Angela Slaymaker, Daniel Slaymaker, Elizabeth Jennewein (Mark), Charles Johnston (Vicki), Luann Beaudoin (Bobby) Kathy Breuklander (Glenn), Dana Servaes (Andy), Bonnie Friesen (Dene), Toni Rodriguez, Greg Hougland, Desiree Shaver (Jarrod), her eighteen (18) great grandchildren; Brandon Gamel (Rachel), Tanner Gamel, Dillon Gamel, Colton Jennewein, Katelyn Johnston, Chase Jennewein, Emily Toolen (Michael), Cole Breuklander (Paige), Jeff Friesen (Christina), Chelsea Finch (Josh), Abby Servaes, Sophie Servaes, Molly Servaes, Landon Slaymaker, Haylei Hougland, Calleygh Hougland, Delanei Hougland, Trevor Shaver, Hayden Shaver, her five (5) great, great grandchildren; Greyson Gamel, Cylus Gamel, Michael Toolen IV, Katy Jo Toolen, Kamden Friesen, Carson Friesen and many in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

LaVora's family extends their gratitude to all that have shared thoughts of love and condolences and would like to share one of LaVora's favorite scriptures: "Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going." - John 14: 1-4

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 13th, 2018 at 2:00pm at Chapel Hill, 6601 S Colorado Blvd, Centennial, CO 80121; the family will greet friends at a reception following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family would ask you to consider a donation to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer's Association in LaVora's name.
